5 Replies to “April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month – For Good Reason”

  1. I can’t believe how prevalent distracted driving actually is.

I was driving home from work just yesterday and the lady in the car next to me was wolfing down a burger and fries – WHILE SHE’S DRIVING. And then I saw her turn around and yell at her kids. Keep in mind this was on the freeway.

My lane was moving fine but her lane of traffic came to a sudden stop and all I heard was a loud crash. Hopefully her kids are okay.

    1. If you could see some of the crazy things people do in some of the distracted driving cases that we have reviewed, it would blow your mind.

  2. I’m all for passing laws to effect change, but these cell phone ban laws are completely worthless!

Estimates are that between 10% and 40% of auto accidents are caused by distracted driving, smart phone use, etc. And those are only the ones who admitted it or otherwise couldn’t deny it. The real numbers are, I’m sure, much higher.

Rather than passing another impotent law that imposes a fine that everyone will ignore, we need to start passing laws that make cell phone use while driving a felony criminal offense that carries a mandatory, non-negotiable $10,000 fine, a mandatory, non-negotiable 3-year prison sentence and a mandatory, non-negotiable 1-year license suspension after the prison term is finished.

Until we make the penalty so bad that it literally scares people into compliance, these completely avoidable tragedies will continue unabated.

  3. I was driving on I-70 today and I passed a girl, only about 19 or 20 years old, and she literally had her smartphone out the window of her car and she’s striking up all these sexy poses and either snapping selfies or doing a live video of herself!

    On the freeway!

    While she was driving!

I swear there is an idiot born every minute!

    1. That reminds me of a case we saw not too long ago where 2 girls were in their car driving down the freeway at about midnight and they decided it would be a good idea to do a Facebook Live video.

They both got so into shooting the video that the driver apparently forgot what she was doing and slowed down to about 20 MPH – again, on the freeway.

They got approached from the rear by a tractor trailer going about 75 MPH whose driver was texting his girlfriend so he never even saw the car going 20 MPH and smashed right into the back of it.

He drove partially over the top of it, killed both girls instantly, his truck flipped on it’s side and he ended up with a traumatic amputation of his left arm at the shoulder and other injuries.

And the girls streamed the whole thing on Facebook Live.

I don’t know if people will ever learn.
